Celebrate NAIDOC Week at the National Gallery.
Join First Nations dancers from Project Dust in a youth-led performance choreographed by Bangarra Dance Theatre, responding to The Aboriginal Memorial, a work that is central to the National Gallery collection.

Over a week-long residency with Bangarra, young First Nations dancers living in Ngunnawal and Ngambri Country took part in cultural exchange with the Yolngu people of Ramingining, custodians of The Aboriginal Memorial. They connected with stories, Songlines and cultural knowledge of this important work. Participants were mentored by Bangarra artists to co-develop a performance sharing their experience through movement, storytelling and collaborative expression.

The Aboriginal Memorial is an installation of 200 hollow log coffins from Central Arnhem Land. It commemorates all the First Nations people who, since 1788, have lost their lives defending their land.

This program is developed with the support of National Gallery First Nations Arts Partner, Wesfarmers Arts.

Youth Programs at the National Gallery are supported by the Digital & Learning Patron, Tim Fairfax AC.

This performance was developed in collaboration with Bangarra Dance Theatre, Rekindling Youth Program

This program has been developed in collaboration with Yolŋu community members of Ramingining and Bula’bula Arts Aboriginal Corporation.

The dancers in the performance are part of Project Dust First Nations Contemporary Dance Group.
